Tunisian diplomat Tarek Ben Salem appointed Secretary General of the Arab Maghreb Union

In accordance with the provisions of the Treaty establishing the Arab Maghreb Union of 1989, and upon the proposal of His Excellency Mr. President of the Tunisian Republic Kais Saïed, and after the approval of all the Leaders of the Member States of the Union, it was decided to appoint the Tunisian diplomat Mr. Tarak Ben Salem to the post of Secretary General of the Arab Maghreb Union for a period of three years starting from June 1, 2024.

Tunisian diplomat Tarek Ben Salem will succeed the current Secretary General of the Union, Taïeb Baccouche, also Tunisian, appointed to this post in May 2016 following a meeting of the foreign ministers of the UMA member countries.

The new Secretary General of the AMU, Tarek Ben Salem (64 years old), joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1990 and has held several positions, the most recent of which was that of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tunisia to the Russian Federation in 2019.

The UMA is a regional economic and political organization created on February 17, 1989 in Marrakech, Morocco. It brings together 5 member states, namely Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania.
